About Reflexology

What is Reflexology ?

A gentle and relaxing holistic therapy that works by encouraging the body to restore and maintain its innate equilibrium to bring repair and foster self healing.

Reflexology is a "holistic" therapy which means that it aims to treat the "whole" person - body, mind and spirit - and not just your symptoms. It is also a complementary therapy: in other words, it works alongside and complements conventional medicine rather than aiming to replace it.

By applying pressure to specific points on the feet (and sometimes the hands), a professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle imbalances, release blockages and restore the flow of energy within the body. The theory is that specific points in the feet and hands (called reflexes) are reflected in the body and that applying pressure to these reflexes can bring about a positive effect in the corresponding organ or system of the body.

Physical and emotional well-being is restored whilst the powerful health benefits of detoxification and improved circulation will leave you feeling energised and refreshed.

Reflexology is also deeply relaxing. It’s a time for you to switch off and let yourself be pampered whilst allowing feelings of stress and anxiety to melt away.

How might it help me ?

Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Nonetheless, reflexology has been shown to be effective in the treatment of:

• Anxiety and stress related conditions
• Arthritis
• Asthma and respiratory problems
• Back and shoulder pain
• Depression
• Dermatitis and eczema
• Digestive disorders including constipation & IBS
• Headaches and migraine
• Hormonal problems including PMT, menopausal symptoms and fertility problems
• Insomnia and sleep disorders
• Sinusitis and allergies
• Swollen, puffy feet and ankles (e.g. during pregnancy, after flying, in hot weather)

Reflexology may also help to increase energy levels, improve circulation and facilitate the elimination of toxins from the body. There is even some evidence that reflexology can help the immune system to fight off illness.

Many people simply use reflexology as a way to unwind the mind and body and it is certainly a very relaxing treatment and excellent for helping you get a good night’s sleep.

After care:

Reflexology is subtle and relaxing therapy. In order to gain the most from your treatment it is recommended that you consider the following:
Drink plenty of water to allow any toxins to be flushed out of your system.
Avoid taking strenuous exercise and stressful situations and rest where possible.
Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol for the remainder of the day, allowing your body to remove toxins more effectively.

It is possible to experience negative reactions after the treatment but these should pass within 24 hours and leave you with a renewed feeling of wellbeing. You may feel dehydrated, tired, dizzy, need to urinate more frequently, have headaches, changes to energy levels and digestion. If you are concerned about this at any point do call me or contact your doctor if you do not feel reasured.
